Boy Bags Wild Hog Bigger Than ‘Hogzilla’
Friday, May 25th, 2007The really scary bit here is that eleven year olds are wandering around with .50 caliber revolvers. Although that is a preposterously large animal.
So, poor children in foreign countries shouldn’t be given writing implements?
Friday, May 25th, 2007The gist of this post seems to be that photographers traveling in Nepal should find ways to get children to pose for pictures without being given pens or candies or money. Instead, the children should be encouraged to have fun with the shoot itself while the pens should be given to local schools.
Maybe there’s some kind of black market in pens I just don’t know about, but if it’s a question of putting writing implements into the hands of children versus putting them into the hands of educational institutions, I don’t have to think very long before telling you how little I think of the use to which most schools the world over put the tools of creativity.
Also, I don’t quite get the high-minded arguments that models shouldn’t be reimbursed for their services if they so desire.
Ah, hang on — it’s a letter to the editor in response to an article published in the print version, of which I do not happen to have a copy. So perhaps that article goes into great detail about how to exploit children by means of writing implements….
May Fauna
Friday, May 25th, 2007I’ve moved most off my photography stuff to “Plentiful Ventilation,”:http://plentifulventilation.tumblr.com but I’ve had some rather oddly good look in the last couple of days with the birds and such near work, and I thought it was worth posting here:
This, I believe, is a tern of some sort. I was on my way to BART when I saw him fishing in the channel. Of course, when I say “fishing,” in this case I mean repeatedly diving at high speed face-first into the river from a height of fifty feet or more. Unfortunately, none of the shots of the bird striking the water came out well enough to post, but I was still quite fascinated.
These are a juvenile and an adult Black-Crowned Night Heron. They’re a little more skittish than most of the birds around me, so it’s always nice when I can get close enough to get a shot or two off. These images are better executed and more anthropomorphically rich than most of the grab shots I get of these guys, where the victory is in just getting the shot in some kind of focus.
Last, and most fascinating, is this stingray. I’d been told they sometimes can be seen in the Channel when the water is low — although I don’t know whether this is to do with them, or whether they’re just not visible when the water is deeper. I was still quite astonished to see one myself, and more astonished that I was able to get a shot which was even a little useful. Unfortunately, I lack a polarizing filter, which as I understand it is what I ought to use in these sorts of situations.
Student who planned to attend Rev. Jerry Falwell’s funeral arrested after homemade bombs found in car - Wikinews
Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007Wow. So, a guy was going to Falwell’s funeral with bombs. Bombs which were meant for people who were going to *protest* Falwell. Why? Because he wasn’t a *big* enough bigot.
I find this deeply disconcerting.
Police do not believe that Uhl was going to target the funeral directly. Instead they believe he was going to target protesters of Falwell who were going to attend the funeral. The group is known as the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church and believed that Falwell befriended homosexuals, despite the fact that Falwell was against homosexuality.

Monday, May 21st, 2007Come with Summer Glau if you want to live!
Excellent. I prefer her when she’s being vaguely inhuman and kicking preposterous amounts of ass, as opposed to when she’s being an ass on ??The Unit??.

Monday, May 21st, 2007This is unfortunate. I miss the days when I couldn’t care less about such things.
