Then once by man and angels to be seen…

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber’d and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

I’m sure Alfred, Lord Tennyson was sick of looking at that damn “teledildonics” nonsense too. Although I suppose his would have been telegraph-controlled and steam-powered. Or perhaps that newfangled internal combustion.

Oh, hey. This is the pattern to that knitted nautilus (sp?) we were admiring.

How can you turn down the opportunity to use the knitting and cephalopods tags at the same time?

I don’t know whether we’ve discussed this squid blog already or not. I rather like the Angry Squid shirt.

Giant squid goes on display - Natural History Museum

Yes, this is just an excuse to use the “cephalopods” tag. Note that the inclusion of tentacles in body length measurements of giant squid tends to result in disappointment, at least for me, regarding their actual overall size. Feel free to introduce mother jokes at will.

Blinding you with science. Or ink sacs.

Ah, cladistics.

I spent a lot of time at an older version of this page. I think the university of Hawaii hosted it.
