Downtown is McDonald’s free…

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

Burlington no longer has a McDonald’s in its downtown. There isn’t one in the state capital of Montpelier, either. Granted, there’s a couple in South Burlington and one in Barre right next to Montpelier, but it’s still amusing to see one close.

It was an ugly, dingy thing anyway.

BLDGBLOG: Drains of Canada: An Interview with Michael Cook

Okay—a new post, since who am I to resist Hawaiian blog zombies? I absolutely wish I was crazy enough to do this kind of crap. However, I’m guessing that the human element, if nothing else, makes this kind of idiocy more dangerous in my neck of the woods than in Canada.

Slovenian cave salamanders, anyone?

If it weren’t for it being the featured article, I’m not sure I would have ever found it.

My ‘okinas aren’t quite right, but this Hawaiian prayer of resuscitation is for the Friendly Tentacle Monster:

‘Aina ka ai, hume ‘ia ka malo, ua ola!

Eat food, gird on the loincloth, [you] are alive!

Then once by man and angels to be seen…

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber’d and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

I’m sure Alfred, Lord Tennyson was sick of looking at that damn “teledildonics” nonsense too. Although I suppose his would have been telegraph-controlled and steam-powered. Or perhaps that newfangled internal combustion.

From this CNN article about “mercy” killings in the wake of Katrina,

“According to the court document, the morphine was paired with midazolam hydrochloride, known by its brand name Versed. Both drugs are central nervous system depressants. Taken together, Foti said, they become “a lethal cocktail that guarantees that you die.”

I find that personally interesting, since that’s what I’ve been on three or four times as a way to reduce my dislocated shoulder.
